Corrective Jaw Surgery

Overbites, underbites, asymmetric (right/left) problems, and related jaw alignment issues can greatly affect your appearance and quality of life. In these cases, Dr. Andrew R. Glenn can perform corrective jaw surgery at his Lincoln, NE, practice so that patients can enjoy proper oral function and a strong bite. Corrective jaw surgery can also provide relief from symptoms of sleep apnea and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. Using advanced Medical Modeling® technology, we can examine your oral structures in great detail to create a completely personalized treatment plan and even perform “virtual surgery.” Contact us today to discover how our corrective jaw surgery can benefit you.

Reasons for Corrective Jaw Surgery

If you suffer from a form of jaw misalignment, you may be a good candidate for corrective jaw surgery. Some of the most common reasons for jaw surgery include:

  • Overbites: When the upper jaw protrudes beyond the lower jaw.
  • Underbites: When the lower jaw protrudes beyond the upper jaw.
  • Asymmetric problems: When the upper and lower jaws are both misaligned.
  • Sleep Apnea: When jaw alignment issues lead to airways becoming blocked, causing breathing to repeatedly stop and start during sleep.

If left untreated, these concerns can not only detract from your appearance, they can also lead to an increased risk of dental damage and painful symptoms of TMJ disorder

Planning Your Procedure

We plan our surgical procedures using advanced technology to ensure treatment is custom-tailored to meet each patient’s unique needs. To begin, we will use cone beam computerized tomography (CT) scans to create a detailed three-dimensional image of your jaw and skull. This digital model allows Dr. Glenn to better examine the relationships between joints and oral structures and more accurately evaluate your concerns. Additionally, by using advanced Medical Modeling software, we can perform what is known as “virtual surgery,” which enables Dr. Glenn to precisely pre-plan your oral surgery procedure.

Surgery and Recovery

During surgery, Dr. Glenn will separate your upper or lower jaw (or both) from the surrounding bones and ligaments before moving it into proper position. The exact steps and techniques involved in your procedure will depend on the degree of correction you require. In general, more basic corrective jaw surgery procedures are performed in-office, while patients with more complex concerns will undergo surgery at a hospital.

Thanks to our advanced technology and Dr. Glenn’s expertise, corrective jaw surgery patients can enjoy relatively quick recovery periods. In some cases, you may be able to return to work and everyday activities within a day or two of your procedure. After a more complicated surgery, however, you may need a week or two of downtime. Throughout your recovery, you will undergo follow-up appointments with Dr. Glenn, as well as with your orthodontist, to monitor your progress and ensure results were successful.
